Volunteering & Internships

About

CWORI interns and volunteers will learn all aspects of applied coral restoration, from hands-on skills to data entry and processing, through working closely with our full-time staff. The following is a non-comprehensive list of the areas that interns will gain experience in:

 

  • Coral husbandry (land-based and in-water nurseries)
  • Herbivore rearing and husbandry
  • Animal rehabilitation techniques
  • Field day skills (coral collection, outplanting, photogrammetry)
  • Photogrammetry skills
  • Outreach and education
  • Coral disease treatment
  • Coral reef restoration scuba diving

Details

  • Internships are unpaid
  • Housing and reliable transportation are to be provided by the intern
  • Daily and weekly hours are flexible to accommodate working other jobs outside the internship.
  • Interns must currently be eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Internships last a maximum of 12 weeks with flexible start and end dates. 
  • The quantity and duration of available internships are at the discretion of CWORI and may vary throughout the year
  • Scuba regulator, dive computer, and BCD will be provided by CWORI.
  • Being scuba-certified is not required, but it does make the internship more fulfilling. CWORI has a dive shop for interns interested in getting scuba certified or completing scuba specialty courses during their internship.

Requirements

  • Passion for Caribbean conservation
  • Dive insurance (for diving interns)
  • Mask, fins, and snorkel (for diving interns)
  • Applicants must provide their own living expenses (housing, transportation, food)
  • Must be able to lift 60 lbs (reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions)
  • Ability to work outside in varying conditions (including sun, heat, rain, wind)
